Does a large, ape-like creature really roam the remote regions of the Pacific Northwest?

For centuries stories have persisted about a large, ape-like creature that supposedly roams the most remote regions of the Pacific Northwest. The indians called him Sasquatch. Many modern day mystery buffs refer to him as Big Foot. There have been numerous sightings, casts of huge footprints, photos, and even a strip of 16mm film made of what some of these buffs swear was this creature. Nonetheless, to date not a single specimen of this creature has ever been produced--not even a carc or complete skeletal remains. So it behoves me to ask, does this creature really exist?
